Unique commissioned works

02 / WHAT IS VITROPIXEL

A contemporary technique
for an ancient art

Vitropixel is a technique and brand created by Luis Torres Candela from the convergence of digital photography, computing, experimentation and mosaic. It makes it possible to create unique commissioned works in Bohemian Glass, using small glass tesserae as the pixels of a digital image.

Each work begins by selecting and framing the image. Its visual information is interpreted and adapted to the resolution achievable in mosaic using tools developed specifically for the process, transforming an image —or part of it— into a physical work conceived for a particular space, scale and purpose.

At the workshop, others now collaborate in the production of the works while learning the processes involved. Proprietary technology and craftsmanship come together in the careful review, adjustment and finishing of each module.

03 / WORKS AND SCALE

From single-module mosaics
to monumental interventions

Each project is studied individually so that the work can enter into dialogue with the place for which it was conceived. From a self-contained piece to a monumental intervention, the image acquires a physical presence of its own in glass.

04 / PERCEPTION

Up close, glass.
From a distance, image.

The image becomes matter.

Up close, the work reveals thousands of small tesserae, each with its own colour and physical presence. As the viewer moves away, these individual units visually merge to form the image.

05 / PREVIEW

See the result
before commissioning the work

The preview contains the same number of pixels as the finished work will contain tesserae. Each pixel represents the colour of a real glass tessera.

We study the framing —which may include only part of the original image—, the colour range and the level of detail. The preview makes it possible to anticipate the final result with a high degree of accuracy before the commission is confirmed.

06 / PROCESS

Making possible what would
otherwise be unfeasible

Proprietary technology in the service of craftsmanship

Vitropixel uses tools, software and systems developed specifically to organise and position thousands of tesserae. Each module then undergoes human review, correction, alignment and adjustment before final fixing.

Human intervention in the workshop: reviewing and adjusting mosaic tesserae

Interpreting the image

The image is studied and adapted to the language of mosaic. The preview defines the colours and resolution of the work.

Organising the tesserae

Proprietary tools assist in organising and positioning thousands of pieces of glass.

Reviewing each module

Manual intervention makes it possible to review, correct, align and adjust the tesserae before they are permanently fixed.

Technology makes the resolution and scale possible.
Human intervention provides control, adaptation and character.

07 / MATERIAL

The material

Bohemian Glass

The tesserae, approximately 5 mm in size, offer a rich chromatic range. Their colour runs through the body of the glass itself, providing depth, brilliance and long-term colour stability.

Light reveals reflections and nuances that change with the illumination and the viewer’s position. This relationship between colour, light and matter is an essential part of the work.

08 / MODULARITY

From single-module mosaics
to monumental dimensions

The modular system makes it possible to move from a single-module work to monumental dimensions. Each module is produced individually and later assembled with precision.

A typical module measures approximately 120 × 80 cm, although the format is adapted to each project. Combining modules increases the scale while preserving the same working principle.

09 / COMMISSIONS

A project begins
with a conversation

An image, a space or an idea can be the starting point for a unique work in glass.

We undertake projects for private clients, architects, interior designers, companies and institutions. Before a commission is confirmed, we assess its feasibility, framing and scale, and prepare a preview, budget and estimated completion time.
